The useful idea in that framing is that furniture is communication. A child reads a room faster than they read a rule. If the block area has a clear edge, a floor surface that differs from the corridor, and shelving that faces inward, the boundary does the work that a teacher otherwise does verbally, twenty times a day.

Design, in this context, means arranging the physical environment so it carries as much of the instruction as possible.

None of that requires an acoustician for a typical room. Carpet in the right zone, soft furnishings, and moving the noisy centers away from the quiet ones covers most of the distance, and it costs less than the furniture does.

Most projects go wrong because nobody wrote down what the room has to do before people started choosing things.

A brief does not need to be long. It needs to be specific about constraints and honest about money, and it needs to exist before anyone opens a catalog.

  2. Give the usable floor area, ceiling height and the position of sinks, doors and windows.
  3. Name the supervision position and the sightlines that must stay open.
  4. List the centers the program requires, in priority order, with the ones you would drop first.
