NeoCon 2026 Recap: Classroom Furniture Trends for Daycares and Early Learning Centers

Held at Chicago's Merchandise Mart, NeoCon ran June 8 to 10, with a Preview Day on June 7, and drew manufacturers, designers, and specifiers from across the country to see what's next in workplace, healthcare, hospitality, and education environments.

Cubby and locker systems have come a long way from the plain wood boxes most of us grew up with. At the show, storage units did double duty as organizational tools, labeled compartments for crafts, journals, games, and blocks, plus named cubbies where kids can find their own backpack and lunch box without help. Little details, like color-coded bins and clear labels, do a lot of work in a classroom. They give children a sense of ownership over their space and cut down on the daily scramble to find missing shoes or folders.

‍Flexible seating is still winning

One of the clearest patterns across the show floor: seating that moves. Low stools and ottomans in soft, durable upholstery showed up again and again, sized for small bodies and easy to reconfigure into a circle for story time or scatter around a table for independent work. Curved, modular pieces that can be pushed together into a bench or pulled apart for individual seating were everywhere too, a reminder that classroom furniture needs to adapt to however a teacher wants to use the room that day, not lock them into one layout.

Design that feels like play, not furniture

Some of the most memorable pieces on the floor weren't chairs or tables at all. Felt tree cutouts, a puppet theater complete with star and moon details, and produce bins shaped like a little market stand turned functional storage into part of the classroom's story. It's a good reminder that in early learning environments, furniture is never just furniture. It sets a tone, and the best pieces make a room feel like somewhere a child wants to be.
